BK Style was founded in May 2006, and produced the first Fashion Week Brooklyn (Formerly know as BK Fashion Weekend) show was held in DUMBO at the Tobacco Warehouse, to astounding revues and a full page spread in the NY Times, a first of its kind for a Fashion Week Event in Brooklyn, New York.

The Brooklyn Magazine name Mr. Davy one of the 100 influencers of Brooklyn, he believes in its 15th year Fashion Week Brooklyn and its status as a top five show in the world not sponsored by Mercedes Benz or any major corporation, is poised for a long stretch of partnerships that is deserving of his creativity and commitment to the world’s most diverse borough.

Rick Davy came to New York from his native Trinidad to learn the ways of the big city and to live out the “American Dream.” After leaving Trinidad, he traveled between New York and Montreal for several years while trying to decide whether he would continue to train to be a professional dancer.

A career in fashion was not on his mind while he was growing up in Port of Spain, Trinidad. After establishing a job at New York University, eventually becoming a full-time assistant manager in the Tisch School of the Arts film department, Davy used the free tuition perk of his NYU employment to study photography and film production.

Eventually he left NYU and started working as a production manager on music videos, including a few by hip hop legends including Jay-Z and Big Daddy Kane. He started shooting professional model portfolios, often selecting the clothes they wore for the shoot. Davy later took fashion related courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology and in 1998 he was introduced to fellow Trinidadian Miss Universe, Wendy Fitzwilliam. Davy became Ms. Fitzwilliam’s stylist during and after her reign as Miss Universe. His work with Ms. Fitzwilliam led him to be the stylist of other Miss Universe winners and other beauty pageant winners; He also worked as the Creative Director and Fashion Consultant for several clothing brands.

His work with Miss Universe and consulting with several enabled him to travel extensively to Greece, Paris, London, Barcelona, Switzerland and Germany and several Caribbean Islands. Mr. Davy also worked as a stylist and fashion director for several national and international magazine, along with producing mini fashion form NYC to Baltimore. Later on, a friend brought Davy on board as a stylist for the CBS Talk show “Forgive and Forget” with Mother Love. They later became stylists for the Black Entertainment Television (BET) show “106th and Park,” dressing hosts AJ Calloway and Free for several years.

Leveraging his success with the show and the passion he had for fashion, Mr. Davy along with a friend and collaborator started the BK|Style Foundation in May 2006. In the same year (May 2006), the first Fashion Week Brooklyn (Formerly know as BK Fashion Weekend) show was held in DUMBO at the Tobacco Warehouse, to astounding revues and a full page spread in the NY Times, a first of its kind for a Fashion Week Event in Brooklyn, New York. The Brooklyn Magazine name Mr. Davy one of the 100 influencers of Brooklyn, he believes in its 13th year Fashion Week Brooklyn and its status as a top five show in the world not sponsored by Mercedes Benz, is poised for a long stretch of partnerships that is deserving of his creativity and commitment to the world’s most diverse borough.

He is most happy about the support he has received in the midst of insurmountable odds, and the success stories of those who have been a part of Fashion Week Brooklyn from Brooklyn, New York and around the world. Fashion’s power center may reside squarely in Manhattan but half of the people who work in the fashion industry live in Brooklyn. Fashion Week Brooklyn, run by the nonprofit BK|Style Foundation, has been championing their work since 2006. As its Creative Director, Rick Davy has helped the event grow into the force that it is today and, more importantly, supporting the careers of countless emerging designers and creative talents.
